MoU signed between Swisscontact and BKMEA to pilot a collaborative Skills Development Program

On 21 November 2021, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Swisscontact and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA). The MoU was signed at the BKMEA Dhaka office by Mr. Fazlee Shahmim Ehsan, Vice President of BKMEA and Ms. Syeda Ishrat Fatema, Team Leader of “Sarathi-Progress through Financial Inclusion”, a project of Swisscontact Bangladesh.

Other esteemed members of BKMEA such as Vice President Mr. Akhter Hossain Apurbo and Directors Mr. Md. Mostafa Monwar Bhuiyan and Mr. Imran Kader Turjo were also present along with the Sarathi team.

According to the MoU, 120 female RMG workers from BKMEA ‘s member RMG factories will receive training on workplace security, health safety, leadership, productivity, and skill development for two months. Once the training is completed, the RMG workers are going to be assessed according to their efficiency and will be appointed in a higher grade as per factory’s requirement. At a later stage, a percentage of female RMG workers will also be assessed further to work for upgrading them as female supervisors.

Regarding the prospect of the project, Mr. Fazlee Shamim Ehsan said, “The RMG sector is the biggest export revenue generator for Bangladesh. Since the RMG workforce consists of a higher number of female RMG workers, projects like these will play a vital role in developing their expertise and stimulate their career growth.”

Eradicating gender discrimination is vital to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal number 5, Gender Equality. Mr. Akhter Hossain Apurbo thinks initiatives such as this one will contribute greatly towards proper implementation of the goal in Bangladesh. The success of the intervention is much anticipated by all the event participants.
