Field Survey for Primary Data Collection:

The scarcity of information and relevant data is one of the major hindrance to research project. In Bangladesh the source and reliability of RMG related data is not sufficient. As our main objective is to create a research ethos not only for the knitwear sector but also for the economy of Bangladesh we taken an initiative to fulfill the gap regarding the availability of data.

Research and Development wing, BKMEA with efficient and energetic research executives are endeavoring to find out the strength and weakness of the sector, Competitive advantage of the sector, Non Tariff measures of the Knit wear export, Impact of Minimum Wage increase on the Knitwear sector of Bangladesh. To find out the real scenario and the real fact of Knitwear sector, R&D team operated a year-long field survey for the first time in Bangladesh covering more than 150 factories in Dhaka (Savar, Asulia, Gazipur), Narayongonj and Chittagong region.

Sought out the global Demand pattern:

The worldwide structure of textile and clothing business is reshaping day by day. With this line demand & supply pattern of apparel trade as well as the global value chain also transforming form traditional low end product to the high end product.

One of the major activities of Research and Development cell is to understand the worldwide taste and pattern of the knit products and provide instruction to the member factories to be attuned to product diversification process. This will help the entrepreneurs to cope up with the immense demand that they are going to receive in the days to come. With the pace of the development, the product categories have been diversified.

Now Bangladesh can supply almost all kinds of products ordered by world class brand retailers. We have also familiarized our factories with the changing patterns in design, art and fashion trend of knit products.

Research-Based Policy Suggestion:

It is often assumed that if our values do not enter into our research, it is objective and above criticism. Objectivity is therefore defined as the basic conviction that there is or must be some permanent, a historical matrix or framework to which we can ultimately appeal in determining the nature of rationality, knowledge, truth, reality, goodness or rightness. (Bernstein 1983:8), the old adage “A Problem well-defined is a problem half-solved’ holds strong even today. Proper definition of a research problem is an important prerequisite for any research study. Often, the formulation of a problem holds more significance than its solution. The manner in which the problem is defined decides the direction for the entire research.

BKMEA, the sole representative of Bangladesh Knitwear sector, has delved into finding shortcomings and potentials for the sector, which in long term will strengthen the very fiber of the sector. Research is an analytical process that brings out step by step a logical solution to a problem. We believe, as apparel business has become internationalized and extremely competitive, we have got to look out for pitfalls and address them accordingly to program, under which we will be doing some groundbreaking and suitable research analysis that will come in handy for formulating policy and strategy. We want that all policies be made on reality and facts rather than understanding and guess.

Initiative for Greening the Knitwear Industry

The current structure of world economic and social trend craves for an era of innovation, diversification, sustainable growth & Development. Now-a- days, the consumers from the developed country are not only concerned to the price and quality of the product but also the production process of the product. It is estimated that adopting sustainable business practices to manufacture goods in conformity with the natural environment will surely pave the way to the future of Bangladesh apparel industry in the 21st century. To pace with the demand of today’s reality in apparel sector, Research & Development cell, BKMEA has been in effort to introduce awareness into the factories and to promote environment-friendly green concepts among entrepreneurs. The Research and Development cell, BKMEA has felt the need for a guideline containing the demand pattern, export-import volume, market size, top demanded items and overall economic structure of different countries across the world for the entrepreneurs of Knitwear sector of Bangladesh. But there are no robust guidebook for RMG factories of Bangladesh, which hampering the export of RMG product of Bangladesh also reduce the competitiveness of Bangladeshi Knitwear product.
