Dinner in honor of Latin American Ambassadors, High Commissioner and CDA: BKMEA eyes at export boost.

On 07 March, 2016, starting from 7:30 PM, BKMEA hosted a diplomatic privilege dinner at Pan Pacific Sonargaon, Dhaka cooperated by Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bangladesh. The dinner party was graced by Ms. Abida Islam, DG, Americas, MOFA, H.E. Mr. Frank Hans Dannenberg Castellanos, Ambassador-designate of Dominican Republic to Bangladesh, H.E. Ms. Monica Lanzetta Mutis, Ambassador of Colombia to Bangladesh, H.E. Mr. Forbes Egerton July, Acting High Commissioner of Guyana to Bangladesh, H.E. Mr. Mentor Villagomez, Ambassador of Ecuador to Bangladesh, H.E. Mr. Augusto Montiel, Ambassador-designate of Venezuela to Bangladesh, His Excellency Mr. Haseeb Mohammed, Chargé d’ Affaires of Trinidad and Tobago to Bangladesh, Mr. A H Aslam Sunny, 1st Vice President, BKMEA, board of directors and secretaries from BKMEA and distinguished officials from Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bangladesh.

The program started with 1 minute standing silence for the lost of mother of our Honorable President of BKMEA and the welcome speech by Mr. A. H. Aslam Sunny, 1st Vice President, BKMEA.

Afterward, Mr. Md. Faruk Hossain, Sr. Deputy Secretary, BKMEA briefed about BKMEA activities, trend of Bangladesh Knitwear export to Latin America and world as well as opportunities of trade collaboration and investment.

Later, Mr. Sunny said that Made in Bangladesh is not a dream now but it is now a name of great opportunities- “Bangladesh is now 2nd largest RMG exporter in the world and it has been due to the commitment, dedication and belief of the workers and entrepreneurs. They can take the challenges. Everybody started their business with SME formation but now they are example to the other”. Moreover, Mr. Sunny said that if we are able to take the opportunities from the Latin America by exchanging B-to-B and G-to-G meetings in regular basis, we can meet the goal to export US$ 50 billion of RMG.

Ms. Abida Islam said that MoFA had always engaged with Latin America to share business values of Bangladesh and collaboration with information sharing. She welcomed BKMEA for coming up with fruitful recommendations.

H.E. Ms. Monica Lanzetta Mutis, Ambassador of Colombia to Bangladesh said, “There is a great opportunity of trade and joint development of the economy.” She advised the BKMEA to formulate a concrete and strong negotiation plan for triggering business further. “Bangladeshi people are mostly dreamy and all dream meets in reality if contributor makes a plan in concrete and specific way” she included.

However, a query was made by H.E. Mr. Mentor Villagomez, Ambassador of Ecuador to Bangladesh to know the domestic market size of Bangladesh for RMG and local branding situation which was replied by Mr. Enamul Hafiz Latifee, Sr. Assistant Secretary, BKMEA, that- Bangladesh occupies almost Taka 200 billion domestic RMG market, and this is mostly filled up by cloth tailoring sector and Bangladeshi local brands together, and consumers here are reluctant buying foreign branded RMG still.

In concluding remarks, Mr. Sunny assured to provide all types of cooperation from BKMEA as an apex trade body of Bangladesh. He again emphasized to send trade mission and delegates team indicating the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
