Finance Minister AMA Muhith yesterday assured Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers & Exporters Association (BKMEA) leaders of specific of allocation for readymade garments sector.
Muhith held out this assurance at a meeting with a delegation of BKMEA at his residence.
More financial allocation and logistic support would be given to protect and develop this sector, he said.
The guidelines of stimulus package would be finalised at the taskforce meeting to be held next month, he added.
The BKMEA delegation, led by it president Fazlul Haque, told the minister that though Tk 5,000 crore stimulus package has been announced in the proposed budget to face adverse effects of the global meltdown, there was no specific budgetary allocation for the garments sector.
The BKMEA President said small and medium size factories have been hit hard due to the global downturn. Most of the factories would not be able to recover loses in next six months. If these are not backed by financial and logistic supports, many of them may cease to exist, he feared.
The delegation apprised the minister that now 5 per cent subsidy has been made for the textile sector, but no subsidy for the garments sector.
